The beat of the drum is still vibrating in our chests. The BRA organization team just returned from an incredible 3-day cultural expedition to the legendary San Manuel Pow Wow, hosted at the Cal State San Bernardino (CSUSB) Athletic Fields
Let us tell you: being there in person was nothing short of breathtaking
As a multicultural community rooted in California, BRA is always searching for events that celebrate living history, ancestral artistry, and deep human connection. This year’s gathering blew all expectations out of the water, proving once again why it is one of the most prestigious cultural events in Southern California
Here is what went down during this epic 3-day celebration of Indigenous resilience and skill:
The Scale: A Gathering of Champions
Imagine standing on the sacred, ancestral lands of the Yuhaaviatam Nation (People of the Pines), surrounded by towering desert mountains, while nearly 1,000 dancers and singers from across the United States and Canada enter the sacred circle.
The air was electric. Competitors traveled from different corners of North America to compete in traditional dance categories—from the athletic Men’s Fancy Dance to the graceful Women’s Jingle Dress Dance.
The Stakes: $250,000 Prize Pool
This wasn’t just a showcase; it was a high-stakes arena of elite mastery. With a massive $250,000 prize pool, the competition brought out the absolute best of the best. Every single step, every spin of the regalia, and every beat of the drum represented generations of preserved knowledge, discipline, and pride. To witness these artists pour their souls into their traditional craft for three intense days was an absolute honor for the BRA community.
Beyond the Circle: The Authentic Art Market
When we weren’t hypnotized by the Grand Entry, our team was exploring the vibrant marketplace. The exhibition featured hundreds of Indigenous artisans selling authentic, handmade treasures.
We saw:
Intricate turquoise and silver jewelry that took months to forge.
Masterfully woven blankets and textiles carrying deep tribal symbolism.
Sacred dreamcatchers and beadwork—true collectible masterpieces.
